Last week VMware has released a new whitepaper with the very promising title “Architecting Microsoft SQL Server on VMware vSphere”. If you have a virtualized SQL Server running on top of VMware, this whitepaper is a MUST READ for you!!! I’ve read through the whitepaper over the last few days, and the content seems quite impressing. It covers almost everything that you have to know how to virtualize SQL Server successfully.
But please bear in mind that there are a few minor inaccuracies, especially the section on page 72 about CXPACKET, MAXDOP, and CTFP (Cost Threshold for Parallelism). They refer to the CTFP as seconds when the Query Optimizer tries to compile a parallel plan. This is wrong, because the CTFP are the Query Plan Costs. I have already talked to the people who are in charge of this whitepaper, and they are aware of these inaccuracies.
If you want to know more about how to Design, Deploy, and Optimze SQL Server on VMware, I also suggest to check out my SQLpassion Online Training about this topic that I will run from October 22 – 24.
Thanks for your time,
-Klaus
