As you may have noticed, the agenda for Data Saturday Holland was recently published. I’m delighted to share that I will be conducting a full-day precon on October 7, along with a one-hour session the following Saturday. Here’s a brief overview of what you can expect from each of my presentations:
Friday’s Precon: Design, Deploy, and Optimize SQL Server on VMware vSphere
Running a SQL Server Virtual Machine on VMware vSphere is a straightforward process. However, unlocking the best possible performance from your SQL Server VM requires a deeper understanding of the core resources used by SQL Server, namely CPU, Memory, Storage, and Network. During this one-day workshop, we will explore how to configure these resources to achieve optimal performance for your SQL Server on a VMware vSphere environment.
Saturday Session: UNIQUEIDENTIFIERs as Primary Keys in SQL Server
In this one-hour session, we will delve into one of my favorite topics in SQL Server – the use of UNIQUEIDENTIFIERs as Primary Keys. While they offer various advantages for developers, DBAs often express concerns when encountering them as enforced default unique Clustered Indexes. We will cover the basics of UNIQUEIDENTIFIERs, examine their pros and cons, and explore their impact on performance in critical databases. If they are negatively affecting your database, I will share best practices for resolving performance limitations without altering your underlying application.
Please note that compressing such a vast topic into a 60-minute time-slot is quite challenging, as the material could easily span over 2.5 hours! Rest assured, I’ll make every effort to deliver the most crucial concepts while keeping the session engaging and informative.
As you may already know, my presentations are packed with numerous cool demos, making for an enjoyable learning experience. I’m particularly excited about this session as it will take place at Kinepolis Jaarbeurs, a cinema venue that adds a unique touch to the event.
After my Saturday session, we will switch into vacation mode since my wife will be joining me. We plan to make the most of our time until Monday evening by exploring various sightseeing spots around the Netherlands. Interestingly, this trip marks my first physical business trip since Covid-19, and what’s even more coincidental is that my last public talk was also in Utrecht back in October 2019. It seems like fate brought me back to the same place!
I look forward to sharing my knowledge and having a lot of fun at Data Saturday Holland. See you there!
